You may end up getting ads after getting Chinese takeout.

A startup called OpenFortune has been putting ads on the backs of the paper inside fortune cookies for years.

OpenFortune has landed some major accounts and has had dealings with about 45% of Chinese restaurants in the country, it's clearly not a novelty idea that can just be dismissed.

They’ve also made developments to the idea by making edible soy-based ink enabling them to make full-colored ads. Typically OpenFortune makes over 100 fortunes for whatever promotion and perhaps most beneficial to the business model is that they are able to sell the cookies twice.

They are able to get the premium price from whatever the client advertises with them and again when selling the cookies to the restaurants at a reduced price.

Surprisingly there's a solid business built around the paper inside of fortune cookies.
